Buzzing

Seriously, there is something going off in the room next to me that is this constant buzzing. I honestly think I'm going to go crazy. It's been going off for like 20 minutes. Please, somebody, make it stop. Here I am on day 2 of 6 full days at sea en route to Manaus. We're going a lot slower than our pace to Dominica so the waves are a lot more rocky and making me feel a little sicky :(

Dominica was BEAUTIFUL. I thought the ride there took a long time so I don't know how being at sea for 9 whole days is going to feel. On the first day in Dominica, we got up (early. at 7 am) in the morning and tried to watch our ship dock but the times got messed up. The pilot was supposed to come aboard at 7:30 but by the time we were looking at like 7:45, we were in port. We snagged a cab into town and walked around taking pictures of everything and ran into a tour guide who told us that, if we were running low on time for the day, to go to the botanical gardens and the "45 steps". The steps brought you up to a point where you had a panoramic view from above of the island. I was sincerely not ready for the hike so we were all in flipflops and everyone knows I'm extremely clumsy soooo I slipped and skinned my knee :( it was so gorgeous though so i was okay with it. But a casual note to self: never wear flipflops on a hike again.

While walking through Roseau to get back to the ship, the ground was super uneven and I stubbed my toe and split it open. Seriously, I'm a walking menace. I went on my first FDP that afternoon (Faculty Directed Practica) and went to see the Carib Indians. They were, I believe because we got cut short on time, the people who inhabited the island first and their settlement was awesome. I took awesome pictures so that's cool. We took the hour and a half bus ride around the island to Carib (Kalinago) territory and saw how they make their Casava bread, how they practice homeopathy, how they juice sugarcane (no, not my bbz), and had snacks of traditional food. By this time, it was 5 pm and we still hadn't made it to the Emerald Pool so I opted out of that; by the time we reached it, the sun would have set and it would have been pointless. The Kalinago tribe are also the indians from Pirates 2 and our tour guide and other people we met were extras in the movie. I'll have to go back and watch it now to see if I recognize any! The huts used in the film were dropped off at the Kalinago reserve after the film was done!

We went out that night to a local bar where, we were hoping, we would have dinner. It had a burger place with it and we were starving. In preport, we had the warnings about "don't eat this in the country, don't eat that" and they literally said we couldn't eat red meats, grouper, barracuda, salmon, burgers, fruits that don't have a peel, etc. so of course I ordered BEEF burger and forgot about the warnings. But don't worry, it was literally the most disgusting smelling thing I've ever had. I didn't feel well earlier, must have beent he fact that I still felt like I was rocking on a ship, so I couldn't even try to stomach it. I took a bite of a fry and spit it out right away and did the same with the burger. Thinking about it now, I'm starting to feel queasy. My friend C ate most of it and another girl, K, took a bite and said it tasted wild. Welp, we came to find out that it WAS wild because it was GOAT. When I told my new friend who works at the pool that it was goat, he was relatively offended because he likes goat. But I don't. I'm a little scarred from this experience now... We each had the local rum punch and, let me tell you, the rum here is EXTREMELY sweet. It was so difficult to choke down. I also won't share the name of the drink but if anyone cares to ask, you can email me and I will.

The next day, K, P, and I went into town again for an internet cafe and to walk around some more. After the hike in flipflops, I wanted to take it a little easy because my leggies were hurting. I'm not all that upset about spending two days in Roseau because it was so pretty, it was definitely worth it. At the internet cafe, I had literally the most delicious Croque Monsieur I've ever eaten. It was on a fresh baguette and the top was cut off and toasted with butter and herbs. It tasted just like garlic bread. I would go back to Dominica just for the Croque Monsieur. Seriously. Then K and P wanted KFC, because Yum Brands (? maybe?) is the only fast food chain on the island and their southern blood sent them into a biscuit craving frenzy. When we walked in, the smell smacked us in the face and it must have been left over from the day before but I couldn't stand to be in there. So no, M&D, I passed up KFC :) We also went food shopping and I bought more nutella, better to be prepared. On our way back, we ran into two men doing SAS and asked if they'd accompany us back as to stop traveling in a group of three girls. We stopped at a fresh fruit market and bought bird bananas and fresh mangos. They aren't even in season yet and it was literally the most delicious thing i've ever eaten. We rinsed it with our water bottles with the water we couldn't bring back on the ship and peeled it by hand while sitting in the back of the market that was set up at the dock. It looked like we were eating baby food but it was delicious. Apparently the pool bar sells fresh fruit smoothies so that might be my new go-to snack, especially when C and I have snacktime... Classes are okay and I find myself actually reading for them because it's so interesting. So hopefully that will stay the trend. We have a reading day tomorrow and I'm planning on actually reading to get ahead. That might be the first time in... ever. But that's all for now! Miss you all! xxx

ps: the buzzing finally stopped after a good 35 minutes. I know you were all dying to know!

Angry Emails, Word Vomit

Hi Everyone!! Sorry I haven't updated this yet but it's really only been about 4 days.  I'm never in my room except for when I sleep. I'm currently in the library and we're passing some island and I really don't know what it is, there's a weird rock thing sticking out from the ocean. So I'm kind of confused. I'll just chronicle how everything has gone so far (written as just taken out of my journals)

I came aboard the ship on the 19th and it is absolutely AMAZING. I can't believe I'm finally here. It was SO disgustingly hot when I was waiting for the check in process to happen. The woman we saw all around the resort happened to be standing in line two ahead of us and her son is my neighbor.

I didn't sign up for any more trips which, in retrospect, was kind of stupid. I really should have signed up for more home stay and service trips but I guess as those come closer I can? I don't know, I hope so! Otherwise looks like I'm actually going to have to join the peace corps. I finally met my roommate and I'm happy with her. K reminds me EXACTLY of my cousin H. She's cool and I think we'll get along. I'm kind of nervous for classes to start tomorrow just because I don't want to be overwhelmed by the professors, which happens relatively easily. I don't know, it'll be interesting though FOR SURE. I've met a lot of REALLY cool people who I really like so far so I'm super excited about that. I'm not happy that the ship workout facilities are reserved for crew, faculty, and staff from the hours of 0530-0800. I really wanted to get up in the morning and work out before Chem but I'll have to find another way to go. I'm also super bummed I didn't print out pictures for my wall but I guess I'll do them at another time? Not sure.

There is actually not a lot of room to put ANYTHING, everyone was right. I over packed and so did K so this will be interesting. There's still some stuff that we (mostly I) want to get for the room like handsoap and more hangers and stuff but we'll revisit that when we get to Dominica (which I still pronounce Dough-mih-nih-kuh not Dough-mih-knee-kuh). Whatever, I guess I am a "stupid tourist".

Because of the visa problems, we stayed in port in Nassau last night. It was kind of rough. I thought I was starting to feel sea-sick but that's nothing until you've actually felt the ship moving. We had orientation and my friend C and I were just lulled to sleep by the motion of the ocean and the fact that we wanted to puke. Looks like I've done a lot of things so far that are stupid. I keep looking out my window to see if I can see anything and it's crazy how fast we're going. It's also weird to see that the wall and the window will gradually go up (and tilt) and then down (and tilt). I was drinking out of my nalgene in the meeting and my whole body moved forward because we were going through waves. I assume it will get better.

We have to return to Nassau tonight so in the 24 hours where we should have been en route to Dominica, we've been in port in Nassau until noon and we're returning to pick up the rest of the "23" in between 5 and 8 and then FINALLY make our way on our voyage! I guess that means we "gain" an extra stop? And speaking of! We now stop in Honolulu AND Hilo! :) I'm so excited, I absolutely LOVE Hawaii. I really want to stay overnight there but it's just hard because they're separate islands. I guess we'll figure it out, it's SO far in advance. We haven't even made it officially OUT of our first port yet! I dont' really know where we are right now, I guess we're just burning fuel out there and we'll be back. The view is gorgeous and once I'm  used to the seasickness, it'll DEFINITELY be better. Can't wait for rolls and pasta and rice at dinner tonight :) Not sure what to do with myself, just going a little stircrazy. I need to get super involved or pick up more classes.

sitting in the union still makes me super seasick and the first global studies class today was torturous. That class is going to be BRUTAL. There are just way too many sound effects and different colors for me to really enjoy it. I was half asleep and I took those kind of notes like I did in high school where thy would turn into scribbles and my eyes would cross. I came back and took Dramamine and passed out for 2 and a half hours. The rocking of the ship really is just like a cradle. I shopped at the bookstore a bit and tried to make my own calendar... Didn't work out too well. I feel like I spent most of my time on the pool deck, as I imagine most of my days WILL be spent. There was a lecture tonight about how to take good pictures and stuff and it was so pedestrian and basic, I was SO bored with it. P and I went to find our tshirts from the guy but he decided to stay on the deck and never come back. So I think I'll harass him about them tomorrow. Seriously, I paid $20 for them, I better get it. We played bananagrams again and it was super fun. Shit hit the fan about FDPs today so I think in Dominica we're going to rent a cabin with wifi? I'm not sure how that will work but K heard that it's like $100 a night for 10 people or so... SUPER CHEAP. I'm really happy the way my FDP schedule worked out right now, I hope I can keep them like this! Fingers crossed! I guess I better get to sleep, it's 1:43 and our clocks are set ahead an hour... I'm reaaaaally going to look forward to the extra hour we gain on fall back in November. Speaking of, when we jump ahead an hour, will we technically be jumping ahead 2?! Things I guess I'll never know... til I ask.

Today, G, C, and I are trying to figure out our plans for Dominica. Apparently everyone has their stuff booked so this is going to be difficult. I had two of my classes today and LOVED them both. I'm not sure really what else to say. This is definitely going to be a lot of word vomit, sorry. Just trying to make everyone happy! I have an FDP tomorrow with the Carib Indians and I'm excited, we'll see how it goes. Until tomorrow!

OMG

It's here. 12 hours until I board! Mom just came home from the parents orientation and she LOVES the ship now! I just can't even. I've met so many parents in the past few days and everyone seems so nice. Last night we went to Señor Frogs and I was totally in my element. It was right on the water and it really reminded me of Monty's. Some real college-sickness going on but I'm just too excited. I can board at 1020!! Due to the visa fiasco, we will be waiting for people to come in on last minute flights from FLL so instead of our scheduled embarkation time of 1700, it will be about 2300. Oh well, we'll play it by ear! I have some pictures to share and will update tomorrow with more pix!!!! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee I can't wait!

The pix:
The bookstore sells Norts. Im sold!

It's meeeee! Look at my new classmates!

Casual pool on deck.... 😝

Only Happy in the Sun

After not sleeping (not a joke, insomnia prevailed) Sunday night, having an 8 am flight Monday morning, and fighting 4 checked bags and 3 carry ons, Mom and I made it to the Bahamas! We're staying at the Sheraton and I really like it. I was reunited with one of my favorites yesterday and I was so excited and I got the best birthday present ever! I got a tour of Nassau and Paradise Island and it's safe to say, I really wish I had stayed at Atlantis. I guess 5th grade me still prevails. But I'll be heading over there for dinner tonight so let's see if I like the inside as much as I like the outside.
Mom and I have been having fun; we went down to Bay Street today to get more visa pictures because OBVIOUSLY I lost my other ones at home in the race for Christmas and I actually look like a convicted criminal. I realized how hard it is for me actually not to smile or laugh or anything in pictures. So to the Vietnamese and Cambodian people who have to process my applications: I promise I'm not that angry.

It seemed to me like on every corner there was a "Duty Free Liquor Shop" and someone trying to sell us alcohol. Interesting because I've never been anywhere where we were solicited like that. The bus to and from the downtown area was cool, they were like big passenger vans and some drive with the doors open! I really liked the breeze and it made looking out at the beach so much nicer.

I've met a few people from SAS so far: 3 at the daiquiri stand yesterday, another's mother at the hotel bar, and then her sons while leaving the daiquiri stand today (but I didn't really meet them, we just passed each other.) Tonight a bunch of people are going to Señor Frogs so that's another thing I'll get to check off the bucket list! I really want to sit in those funny chairs where it looks like I'm not wearing pants. I'm a rational person. So off to dinner! I'll keep this posted, hopefully over phone blogging. I'm not really sure but Verizon is being funny about my phone... But until then I'll just sit and enjoy the view from my room...

Final Countdown

OMG. omg. OMG. omg. OMG. omg. It's actually here. All my bags are (mostly.) packed and I'm (reluctantly but super excitedly) ready to go. Packing has been nuts and I've packed and repacked at least twice. But here it is. Getting up at 5:30 am tomorrow morning, packing the last minute essentials, driving down to HPN and going en route to the trip of a lifetime! I can't believe it's here! Crazy crazy crazy crazy! Mom and I are staying at a seemly beautiful hotel in the Bahamas and I can't wait to be reunited with ma Lips! Two full days in the sun and at 10:30 (give or take) on Thursday Morning, I'll be boarding the ship! The ship officially embarks at 5 pm though so if you happen to be in the Bahamamammaas or Dominica, feel free to come wave goodbye!

This is what 4 months of toiletries look like. RIDICULOUS.

Seriously though, the only clothes I brought.

Told you, 2 suitcases and a hiking backpack. Check out the book Mariss!

I've been updating a playlist of songs for SAS so I might as well put them here. People were compiling in the group as well so some are coming from there. Also, as we speak, I have 152 items downloading on iTunes. Redownloading all of my Gossip Girl and How I Met Your Mother (plus seasons 3-6 new).

Sunshine State

I was planning on posting this from this morning but now it just seems appropriate. All my sisters are back at school for recruitment and after crafting another slideshow, I'm upset I can't be there. So I wish them all the best and to have so much fun because, weirdly, I love this time of year.
I know, I know. This blog is kind of Gossip Girl-esque but I'm just trying to keep identities semi-secret. All my family and friends will know who this is, obviously, but if someone happens to find it, it won't be too easy to know who I am.
But back to the City Beautiful. Eating a bacon, egg, and cheese on a bagel at a diner in town just doesn't compare to having one at the Emps. I'm craving some Prime and rolls from Big Cheese and it's weird I won't be back for 8 months. It's weird that I've been craving places from Miami as opposed to wanting what I have at home. I even want to go to a club- SO unlike me.

But on a more serious note. Today I found out that a good friend from when I was a camper and CIT passed away. I really don't know what to say about him, he was the most big-hearted, fun loving, amazing, 14/15 year old I knew. He was always so happy, and even when he was angry, he still seemed mostly happy. He had something about him where everyone was just pulled in. I can't remember certain moments being together because I feel like from the time we, as the 6 of us, met you at Magic Falls, we were always together. You always made me laugh, and when you were a CIT, I chided you because I knew you could be great. I was thinking about you for the past couple of weeks and was thinking about trying to see you when I was back south next fall. This has taken me almost an hour to write because I just can't pinpoint exactly what to say. So I'll wrap it up. Rest Easy, Logan. Keep being you up there and we'll meet again soon, sit on some bleachers and talk about nothing, just like we did all those summers. Love you.

Quotes

Along with the prior post from today, some people have been posting quotes in the group. I like a lot of them and want to save them all in one place, so this will be a constantly updating post. SORRYBOUTIT. (also, I've been saving some of these on stickies so I'm not really quite sure where I've found all of them. Not trying to step on anyones toes if they're their own proper words, actually sorry about it (not sarcastic.)

‎"There is nothing--absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats." - Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows

Love is universal, Knowledge is universal, Kindness is universal and I want to know what not only makes us similar but what also makes us so different.
The love of the ocean, comes from deep inside. it's where i feel at peace, where I can recharge my batteries. the ocean saved my life.
Let us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds.
~Theodore Roosevelt

"Go in search of life's possibilites, they are endless as the earth."

Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world.  Moby Dick

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

“All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.” – Martin Buber

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” – Mark Twain

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” – St. Augustine

“There are no foreign lands. It is the traveler only who is foreign.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

“The use of traveling is to regulate imagination by reality, and instead of thinking how things may be, to see them as they are.” – Samuel Johnson

“All the pathos and irony of leaving one’s youth behind is thus implicit in every joyous moment of travel: one knows that the first joy can never be recovered, and the wise traveler learns not to repeat successes but tries new places all the time.” – Paul Fussell

Travel isn't always pretty.
It isn't always comfortable.
Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart.
But that's okay,
The journey changes you...
It should change you.
It leaves marks on your memory,
On your consciousness,
Your heart,
And on your body.
Take something with you,
Hopefully you leave something good behind.

Home Stretch

Today (tonight) is January 5, 2012. First post of the new year! Happy New Years to all I haven't yet sent wishes to and a very healthy and prosperous one; may you follow your dreams. Seems like 2012 is going to be the most exciting one yet. Aside from the impending and ominous ending of the Mayan calendar, it is also the year where I (finally, wink wink nudge nudge) get a real (?!) job (boo.), turn 21, hope the Canes make it to a decent bowl game, and do the trip of a life time!

I honestly can't put into words how excited I am to be doing this. And I can't thank my parents enough to be sending me on this amazing opportunity. Seriously, I've said it once and I'll say it a million times more: thank you guys for everything and I hope I see you both in China and miss you already.

Packing, thus far, has been relatively nonexistent. Once I unpacked, moderately, from UM,  I let it all go. I'm sure there are still bags of my stuff lying around this house waiting to be put into a home but I can't deal with that now, or rather, I just don't care to deal with it.

Mom and I went to CVS last week and literally bought out the store. Glad to know if anything happens, I'll be set for goodsies. It better all be allowed on the ship, I'm not buying cold medicine in Vietnam. The majority of things I had left to order have arrived and, as the girl who REALLY can't have nice things, already scratched the face on my new watch. Speaking of new things, I GOT THE IPHONE! So look forward to more posts in port, hopefully with pictures! I've set both the new watch and the new phone to military time so I can get used to what will be used on the ship. I'm still looking at my watch going "OMG IT'S 15:29?! THAT'S SO LATE!" Nope, it's just 3:29. Good to know.

All my textbooks have been ordered and shipped to the boat and just need to order the rest of them for the kindle. Good thing for E-Readers. I still can't figure out exactly what I'm packing and I know I'll be bringing like 7-10 pairs of shoes. I just can't help myself. I've done 4 loads of laundry today so 99% of my belongings will be clean to pack. It's just so weird to think that I need to compact everything I'll need for the next 4 months into 2 suitcases and a carry on. Weird.

I've found a few pictures (and a blog) that are hitting home, along with my entire SAS-themed pinterest board. Sharing them for your entertainment. That's it for now, not sure what else to say. Will update with pictures of me packing because Lord knows it will be a sight.
